Editorial Review

Another definite winner in many categories. This mat is great looking and earth friendly, and it features the company’s famous quality and very fresh design. We were overall impressed with traction and cushioning and really liked the look of this natural mat. The closed-cell design is definitely an asset, while sacrificing a little bit of traction the mat’s surface is well-protected against moisture and bacteria, making this mat easy to maintain.

I purchased this Hugger Mugger mat based on the reviews above….big mistake. I attend yoga classes 2-3 times a week, so I have had a chance to so through a number of mat’s in 4+ years. I gave this mat about 2 months before I decided to submit a review. I don’t see ANY redeeming quality about this mat…NONE. Not only is it not durable, but if you get even a slight amount of moisture on the palms of your hand, and you will slip all over this mat. Remember the ‘slip and slide’ mats when you were a kid?? I think this yoga mat is made of the same material. Stay away at all cost…..

When I set out to buy a new yoga mat, I really wanted something that would hold up under a rigorous 4-days/week yoga “habit” – prior to this I bought the “el cheapo’s” at the local store and they were perfectly fine for beginning and gentle pace. But when I joined more rigorous yoga classes, those did not hold up and peeled, and slipped and and and. I am very happy with my purchase. The mat did not have that yucky rubber smell associated with new mats. It did take a couple of weeks to break the mat in and get it to a non-slip state despite washing it first, but now it is fantastic. For those people worried about the slip factor for the initial break in period, a towel worked just fine.
Also, the thickness is great for practicing on hard floors and does not compromise the stability factor.

Pros- I bought this mat for yoga class, but it would work well for pilates, too. The thickness (which is actually 3/8″) is wonderful for preventing pain in my knees, hips and wrists. Not the best for balancing poses, of course, but I’ve always stepped off even the thinnest mats for balancing. I am 5′ 7″ and the extra few inches of length really make a difference. I don’t have to adjust as often to keep my whole body on the mat.
Cons- Can get a little slippery if it gets wet, although this seems to be happening less the more I use it. Still, this mat might not work for you if you sweat heavily. It doesn’t lay totally flat on the end you first roll up, so you have to unroll it and then flip it over so it won’t curl up while you’re using it. It smelled a bit strong at first, but I just gave it rub down with a dilute blend of Mrs. Meyers all-purpose cleaner and water and then left it unrolled for a few days in a well-ventilated area. It took about 2 weeks for the smell to dissipate completely.
Overall I’m very happy with this purchase. Many people in class have asked me where I bought it.
***Update: I’ve had this for well over a year, and it’s held up quite nicely. No complaints whatsoever. I don’t do a ton of yoga, but I have used it for other floor exercises that would otherwise hurt my knees, hips, etc. If you’re looking for a mat to put some real comfort between you and the floor, this is a great choice. It is a bit harder to balance on a thick mat, but I see it as a simple way to challenge yourself a bit further in your exercise routine.***

I purchased this mat less than a month ago and when I went to unroll it the 3rd time for class the ribbing on the mat had disappeared on the upper portion of the mat where my hands would be placed! I didn’t do anything unusual to cause the morphing. I am in the process of returning it.

i bought THREE of these mats from amazon in 2007. 2 for me and one for my dad.
i do 2-3 hours of yoga/pilates a week.
i first learned about this mat from my yoga instructor who came back from a conference with one.
because i tore my ACL and never had it repaired (PT only and doing fine), i need the added cushion.
also, as part of my PT, i have to do lots of balancing exercises. so when i am in class, the cushion makes me work harder to maintain balance poses.
those are the pros. the biggest con is that the treads wore down after a year. at that point, there was not enough traction for downward facing dog or warrior. so i ended up turning it over in order to use the treads on the other side. it works but i have to keep the ends from curling up with small weights.
overall, it is still the best type of mat i’ve had in 6 years.

I have been practicing Yoga for many years. One gal that practices with me loves this mat. Because I needed a new one I inquired and bought one. IT WAS A HUGE MISTAKE…$75!!! Doing a headstand and shoulder stand on this thick mat is like doing these on a bed mattress. My neck is now so messed up I will be lucky to be able to ever do these poses again… My chiropractor is needed weekly and I still need a new mat. Don’t buy this product for an advanced Yoga practice!!!!

This is a very excellent Yoga Mat which has no unpleasant odor, is long enough and sticky enough to hold me in any asana I’ve tried. And it’s very pretty too. I’m content with it. Thank you for making it available and for getting it to me in less time than expected.

I was so excited to receive the mat. It looks really nice and has a nice texture. I like the length of it being a few inches more than the standard size. I can’t wait to use it. But little did I know, it has a very strong yucky smell, in some way worse standard yoga mats. I washed it with soap and water and laid it flat in the garage to air it out. It’s been three days, the smell seems to fade a little but it’s still not usable. My other yoga mats took only a couple of days for the smell to fade away.
Update:
It’s been more than a month since I received the mat. It still has that light rubbery smell. I had it out in the sun several times but I can’t seem to get rid of the smell. Other than that, I do like the mat. It has a nice texture and provides good traction.

The rubber that this mat is made of is just too soft. I practice hot room power yoga and sure this mat is non slip, but my hands and legs sink into the mat and stretch the mat out. Makes me feel like I am practicing yoga on a piece of cotton fabric.

I really loved this mat at first. Yes, it was a little slick and smelly, as most new mats are, but after scrubbing with vinegar solution and letting it sit for a few days, the smell and residue were gone. The mat is soft and supportive, a good size for a taller person (I’m 5’11″), and non-toxic. The only drawback was that it was always kind of slick if my hands were sweaty (a problem in an 85 degree ashtanga studio – I can’t even imagine doing hot yoga on this).
But after a few months, it began to shred where my feet are in a downward dog. It’s been about 5 or 6 months of 3-5 practices a week, and dime-sized chunks are now missing. I leave class with blue plastic lint all over my pants and under my toenails (which I keep trimmed, thankyouverymuch).
In short, if you’re doing a more relaxed style of yoga on a hard wood floor, this might be a nice cushy mat for you; it certainly feels great for savasana. But it is not durable under regular use, and it is not appropriate for a sweaty class.

As a beginner to yoga, I needed to find my own mat I could start taking to class. After much research I chose this one. When I received it I washed it in a mild soapy solution and left it unrolled for a day. The first couple times of use the mat seemed a little slippery, but this has gone away. I love the thickness of the mat. I spray it with a lavender solution after every use. It is holding up well after 30+ hours of use and hope it continues to do so. When I’m done using it, I can recycle it. Thanks Hugger Mugger.

I had a this mat for about a year.
Positive
1. I do like the thickness/extra padding with it
2. Biodegradable is good for the environment
Negative
1. Tends to flex in wide legged poses.
2. Biodegradable has its price, I leave my mat to in the car and I live in Southern California. Heat and direct sunlight WILL destroy it. I didn’t realize this and now its pretty much done for.
If you are careful with it I give it 4 stars but since many people will not be I have to give it 3 stars.

I searched many sites looking for the right mat . I wanted something a little thicker for hardwood floors. I was very concerned about what the mat was made of and I thoroughly checked into my options. Price was also a big consideration—I found some really nice sounding mats, but they were mostly way out of my price range. One review said the mat smelled bad–glad that I ignored that one, because it does not smell bad at all. I could not be happier with my new mat!

I really really loved this mat when I bought it. It has a great non-slip surface and is really squishy and wonderful. Several months into ownership, I noticed that it started slipping beneath me. I can’t get through a yoga class without it stretching several inches and moving me around the floor. It COULD be because I left it in my car all summer and its fabulous biodegradable nature lead to its demise. So, I don’t know if it’s exactly why, but DON’T LEAVE IT IN A HOT CAR!

I love this mat. Still sticky, and in great shape after 3 years. Bonus: no nasty synthetic smells.
I do take good care of it:
It never gets put away damp.
I don’t use it outdoors.
I don’t leave it in a locker or unbreathable bag.
These are biodegradable mats, so you should treat them with a bit of common sense to ensure that they last (I think 3 years and going strong is pretty good!)

This mat is perfect for me. The 10mm thickness provides the cushion that I need for my ankles, back, and knees. I also love that it is decomposable, recyclable, does not absorb moisture, is toxic-free, hypoallergenic, and wipes clean with a mild solution of soap and water. Very much worth the price.

Love my Yoga mat. I bought this specific one because I am allergic to latex, and I wanted a mat that wasn’t full of other chemicals. I love it! We bought it for our Wii Fit, and wanted a longer one as my husband and I are both of 6ft. It has no odor and has a nice grip.

I love the non-toxic quality of this mat. As I am very sensitive to chemicals, the fact that this mat is PVC, rubber, and latex free, is most important to me. Cannot wait until I am doing yoga so often that I am shredding it with my toenails as the other reviewer. Also, I’ve noticed that this is the nicest looking mat in my class.

When I first bought this mat I loved it. After a year of use the mat started to shrink in spots and buckle. It has become so bad that I had to abandon it because it would not flatten out and it became difficult to execute balancing poses. I contacted the company explaining the situation and sent a picture. They told me that the mat was designed to be biodegradable and would break down under some conditions and environments. If you expect your yoga mat to last, then look at other products.

I have a basic sticky mat that is good, but my knees hurt when I kneel. This mat has more cushion so that I don’t have to alter my exercise to save my knees. It is also longer so that my head and feet are both cushioned when I’m lying down. Haven’t owned it for long, so I don’t know how it’ll hold up over time, but I like it a lot so far.
