    ★★★★☆

Sattva indeed, this is a one of a kind yoga mat made from natural jute and earth-friendly polymer. Hugger Mugger were able to create a durable and a relatively long lasting product that looks great, performs well and feels amazing. The only downside of this mat is that it will not last as long as regular mats, because natural fibers tend to shed and wear off, especially during extensive practice. We really enjoyed the feel of jute, the breathability of the mat and its great traction and support. This is something worth checking out.

I do yoga asanas 4 times a week. Before this mat I used a thicker, blue $20 mat from walmart and after learning of hard chemicals used in the production of those mats and needing more grip I opted for this mat.

It is noticibly heavier, but more compact when rolled up.

I slipped on the walmart mat (thick model, not the really thin ones) only when sweating heavily, but this one i’ll slip when im bone dry and easily when I’m slightly perspiring. Perhaps this is normal for a new mat with this type of eco friendly material coating on top of the jute?

I hope the original coating or whatever will break off or break in and get stickier. I was really wanting a 100% jute mat with the rough plant fibers on the surface, which I would imagine would give excellent traction and a very pleasant natual plant fiber feeling, but no mats are made in this way that im aware of.

For now this is a good mat for me if only because its more eco friendly than my previous mat, and hoping wont leech chemicals into my skin, but the traction is poor for being advertised as “a jute mat, the grippiest of mat materials”, and it would be, if it were actually jute on the surface. The market should advertise jute mats as environmental friendly and renewable, natural and all that good stuff, but not recommend jute mats as the grippiest of mats, when the actual jute fiber isnt even the part of the mat that is in contact with your hands, but instead a very smooth and slippery top layer of synthetic material.

Thanks I hope you find this review helpful.

By far the best mat I have ever practiced yoga on!

Greaat grip, no funky skunky odors, and a nice neutral color :)

This mat helps tremendously with sweaty hands and feet. The jute fibers absorb sweat, and have a coarse texture that helps me grip the mat. The coarseness felt slightly abrasive at first, but after a couple of hours I stopped noticing it; now I just notice the superior grip. The mat is still largely composed of rubber, so with the exception of the absorption and texture of the jute, it behaves like a typical sticky mat. If you prefer a blanket or an extra-thick mat, this might not be for you, but if you’re looking for a sweat-friendly version of the basic sticky mat, it’s perfect.

I bought this to replace a slippery mat I previously purchased, and am happy I did. The yoga teacher even complimented it (I’ve never heard her comment on a mat before). It could be scratchy on my knees if I were wearing shorts, but I always wear pants to yoga, and I really like the grip I get with my hands.

I was hoping I would get all natural materials, which this is not, but it is very functional and a good value.

Good size, much less odor than rubber mats, and great grip. However, the natural fibers of the mat can be very itchy and uncomfortable until you wear it in a little.

I bought this mat because I sweat a lot and need a very non-slip mat. I have used it for a few weeks now, and find that my hands slip in down dog. I hope that as I use it more, it will improve in its non-slip aspect.

I did not notice an objectionable odor, as some people have reported.

I think this mat is perfect. Just the right amount of natural fibers embedded in the rubber makes for a nice earthy feel. Just let it air out for a bit to get rid of the smell but honestly I don’t mind it. I think for the price it’s a great deal & better for your health!

I’ve had this mat for a few months now and use it pretty frequently. I love it. It has no smell, is comfortable (on a carpeted surface), so far shows no signs of wear and is much more eco-friendly than a regular foam mat. Highly recommended.

This mat works perfect for me. My hands and feet tend to get sweaty during class and this mat provides the perfect amount of friction. It has no bad odors either, which is a big plus! I would definitely recommend this mat!

I love this mat. It has no smell, and it is very soft. It is great on carpet but I do have to put another mat underneath it on wood floors because it is thin.

I’ve been using this mat for nearly a month now (yoga 2-4 times/week) and it’s held up very well. It’s a little longer then other mats, I’m 6’2″ and find the length just about right (it is slightly narrower then other mats I’ve used). It is a little scratchy on legs and arms, however I didn’t find it bothersome; it’s definitely not an artificial cheep “soft” plastic mat.

I’ve never slipped once, always have grip, even when hands/feet/mat is moist. The backing is perfect for slippery wood floors, I don’t have issues with it bunching up either. There is no chemical smell (though it does have a slight odor when first unboxed), however I would like to know more about this “PER” material, can’t seem to find much reference to its composition/manufacturing anywhere.

When rolled up it seems a little larger then other mats, probably due to its slightly longer length, but it’s surprisingly light. The mat is a standard thickness, however, I find some kneeling poses slightly uncomfortable; sitting poses are fine. If you have “boney” knees/elbows, you’ll either have to toughen up or use some extra padding (I don’t find it distracting).

Over all I’d recommend this mat and look forward to enjoying it for many years.

This is a wonderful mat. No funky rubbery smell because its a mixture of natural fibers and PER, which also makes it super easy to keep my grip; now my hands rarely slip no matter how much I sweat (unlike with my previous mat, a junky Gaiam one). I only give it 4 stars instead of 5 because bits of the material are starting to come off with wear, but I’ve had it for about a year ago and use it pretty frequently (3-4 times a week) so I guess that’s to be expected!

I’m having trouble finding details about Polymer Environmental Resin. I wonder about health affects. I don’t like the smell coming out the package, and dread deep belly breaths inches away from this mat. Haven’t used the mat yet. It’s off gassing outside for a while before I give it a whirl. Considering the smell, I regret the purchase.

I LOVE this mat!! I was slipping all over the place with other mats. This is the only one I have used that there is real grip. Particularly for Bikram or hot yoga, this mat is the best.

I just bought this mat after trying it at my local yoga studio. It is surprisingly softer than I expected a mat with Jute to be. It looks great on my maple wood floors (almost like a natural fiber rug) and I intend to just leave it out, possibly exercising more now. It looks very natural and not “gelee” like many yoga mats do. I love it and recommend it to anyone looking for a mat with some class.

I have been using the Hugger Mugger Sattva Jute mat for about a month and have found it to be exactly what I was looking for at this point in my practice. I have been doing yoga regularly at home with DVDs (3-5 x/wk) and class weekly for the past three months. I have noticed and enjoy the additional sense of stability I find in my poses with the texture of the jute in this mat– without additional stickiness that I don’t need. The length and width of the mat are fine for me (I’m 5’4″). In class, I use it placed over one of the mats provided. At home I use it over carpet. I think this will be a great mat to practice on outdoors once the weather improves. I searched a long time for an affordable mat that was not a PVC wasteland and would benefit my developing yoga practice. Found it!
