Yoga Mat Review

★★★★☆

Gaiam is a well-know and trusted brand, manufacturing product solely for the yoga industry. When you buy a Gaiam product you are guaranteed a certain level of quality that many companies cannot achieve. This is a generic beginners mat, with high-quality screen printing. What makes this mat stand out is the quality of manufacturing, and the actual material used. Gaiam definitely has a secret sauce – while this mat’s material appears to be generic PVC foam, it is not, we are certain there is an amount of natural rubber added to the mix. The mat’s characteristics are above average, featuring some great traction and comfortable cushioning. This mat is a definite step-up from your generic PVC studio mat.

Upon purchasing this mat I was very pleased, loving the design and stickiness. I have only been doing yoga for 5 months and my mat is already stretching. I was not sure what to look for in a mat, and should have done some research first. When in down-dog my mat stretches and sort of bunches up in front of my fingers and behind my toes. It has also never flattened completely.

This mat literally stinks. The plastic/chemical smell STILL gives me a headache 6 months after purchase. I use it 1-2 times per week but to this day childs pose/anything where my face has to be close to the mat is unenjoyable.

good mat for the price…good for beginners…not the right one for teachers…would enjoy a thicker version

Works great for what I need. I am very new to yoga so I am not entirely sure what you look for in a mat. This one works great for me. I use it at home mostly on a carpeted floor. It does move sometimes and I have a hard time if my hands get sweaty. It seems a little thin for harder surfaces. But all in all a great mat. Very pretty, never noticed any of the smells that I have seen other people put on here.

I have had this mat for three months, using 3-4 times a week for a 1 hour class, and it falling apart, coming into pieces all over, and now on my clothes. I have never had this happen with a mat, and I have three other ones I still use that are nearly 5 years old. But this was a gift and I guess I broke it in! And I am only 158lbs and not used in a power yoga class…just a standard Astanga.

I’ve had this mat for about a month, using it 3x per week. It’s decent. It doesn’t smell of chemicals/plastic unless my nose is really close to the mat, and even then it’s a rather faint smell. Aside from a tiny bit of curled up edge – easily fixed with a quick reverse roll – my mat laid flat the very first time I unrolled it. The colour and tree screen print are attractive – I’m very partial to sage green though.

Downside: The foam isn’t very dense, and I can often feel the floor. For me this is a huge drawback as I have sensitive bony areas that end up pressed uncomfortably (and sometimes painfully)into the hard floor during particular asanas. I’m fine with the thickness of the mat, but I would have preferred a denser material. Also, It IS quite slippery. It grips the floor nicely, but my hands slip all over the place when I’m in downward dog – so annoying!

It is what it is for the price. I’ll continue to use it for now, but I wouldn’t purchase it again.

That’s it basically, the mat is not sticky. I bought it to begin trying to do yoga at home (I have just begun practicing yoga), and it did not compare to the loaner mats at the studios I’ve been to here in Chicago. Look elsewhere.

As soon as I opened the package, the chemical smell of this mat overwhelmed me. I thought airing it out would help, but my first yoga session on it caused my throat to constrict. I washed it in the bathtub, but it still stinks–in fact, my entire bathroom stinks. I am not chemically sensitive, so if you are, you’d best beware. I will return this product.

The Gaiam Tree of Life Yoga Mat is exactly what I needed to help me get started in Yoga practice. Though this mat is a very thin version compared to many I have seen, I thoroughly enjoy my purchase and am glad I invested into a necessary piece of equipment that is versatile for general stretching, core exercises, gym use, and pilates as well.

Save your money and get a decent mat. This mat is very slippery and I had to use the floor after 5 minutes of useing this mat.

This mat embodies everything I am to achieve when I am yogaing, which enhances the experience. It also is great for gripping, and is taller than my body. Not super thick, but comfortable. Overall, an enjoyable mat, but probably not a great travel size. Ohm to that.

I just wanted to say that if you’ve ever used a Gaiam mat before, or any other mat made of this material for that matter, the smell is no different. It just has that “new” plastic smell. I’ve had mine now for a couple of months, and the smell has all but disappeared. It was only noticeable if my face was especially close, but nowhere near as offensive as the reviewer below found it. So I wouldn’t let the smell deter you from purchasing such a beautiful mat.

Its about time someone made some mats with personality!

My yoga instructor suggested to spray this with a solution of white vinegar and water. I sprayed it lightly about 3 times, drying in between, and finally wiped it off with a damp cloth. I am pleased with the mat now. I didn’t have trouble with chemical smell, flat rolling, etc.

I am very disappointed with this mat – my hands and feet slide all over the place when I try to use it. In the end i gave up, and halfway through class went to get one of the class mats out of the cupboard. I have yet to find out whether Gaiam will give me a refund without charging me for the return shipping.

I’ll be honest this is my very first yoga mat but I can’t believe I waited so long to get one. This mat is good and sticky. It really helps me reach my full length in various poses such as downward facing dog and even bending forward in cobbler’s pose etc.

I have noticed a smell of plastic when my nose is pushed up to the mat but no other time. I do not have any sensitivity to chemical smells but I do live in a house with someone who does and he can’t smell a thing. I have only had it a few days; however I expect the smell will eventually be undetectable even up close, much like a new car.

The color is very pretty, a soothing green with a light greenish-yellow tree. The tree is screened on. Some people may feel this is a bad thing as screened on images sometimes begin to peel off. This image appears to be very secure to the surface and I have no such worry.

It’s not very sticky, and after a couple gentle cleanings, the surface started to fall apart. Not good for vinyasa flow.

I agree, this mat has the most obnoxious chemical smell. I bought it because it was promoted to be free of 6 phthalates that pose health concerns. But what did they use instead? I can’t even lay on it. And btw I’ve had other yoga mats that did NOT have this smell. I should not have to wait months for this smell to go away to use it. I should be able to use it today but instead it’s getting returned today. Perhaps Gaiam needs to rethink their product.

Used for the first time yesterday. Smelled HORRIBLE. Became nauseous during class. And to top it off, it was horribly slippery. Ended up using the floor during class.

Waste of money!
